The Paramount Hudson Valley Theater once more proved itself to be the region’s home for the Blues when multi-Grammy Award winner Robert Cray and the Robert Cray Band played here on September 8.
The audience was first treated to a blend of jazz and folk courtesy of opening guest KJ Denhert, a New York native and accomplished singer and songwriter.
“[KJ] is amazing,” said Vanessa from Pleasantville, who had previously seen Denhert perform at other venues in Westchester.
Vanessa said she was at the Paramount with her boyfriend, who is a huge Robert Cray fan, but that didn’t mean she doesn’t appreciate the bluesman’s music herself. She said Cray’s music is beautiful and that she especially loves “Right Next Door,” from his Grammy award-winning album Strong Persuader.
The audience cheered loudly as the lights went out to welcome Cray on to the stage. The band started off the night with “Phone Booth,” from the 1983 album Bad Influence.
Vinnie, a Cray fan from Bedford, was there with his friends Frank and George.
He praised Bad Influence and “the way [Cray] bends those strings.” He and his friends also said they love Cray’s relaxed, “European” style onstage, as the Blues virtuoso was wearing sandals during his concert.
Antoinette, from Croton-on-Hudson, said that was probably her third time seeing Cray live. She called him a great musician and said his music “is very relaxing.”
Jason, a fellow Croton resident, said he has followed Cray’s career for the last 20 years, and agreed with Antoinette on the character of Robert Cray’s music.
“It is smooth, feel-good music,” Jason said.
The Blues Hall of Fame, which itself celebrated its 2013 induction ceremony at the Paramount, inducted Cray in 2011. Cray has shared the stage with the likes of Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, John Lee Hooker, and B. B. King.
Robert Cray is just one of the many fantastic musicians who visit the Paramount, make sure to check the theater’s website for new of upcoming performances!
