The 2011 Songwriter of the Year, Martin Sexton, returned to the Paramount Hudson Valley Theater stage to perform his classical music live Fri., Sept. 9 in Peekskill, NY.
The Syracuse, NY native played at the Paramount 10 years prior to Sept. 9 and brought his unique and calming music. He played in front of an excited crowd who both adore Sexton and appreciate the experience to see him.
“His voice is incredible,” said patron and Bedford, NY resident, Samantha Bailey. “His range and vocal strength just reaches so far. A lot of artists, when you see them in person, they’re not the same. But Sexton is nothing like that. He’s the best live performer I’ve ever seen.”
Sexton’s career began in the 1980s, but was not interested in the sound that the musical landscape at the time produced. His passion for a more traditional/classic sound is what initially shaped his one-of-a-kind music.
“[His music is] mellow and reminds me a little of Dave Matthews,” said Somers, NY resident Fred Bailey. “Very peaceful and relaxing. It’s reminiscent of the 1960s.”
The entire music pallet was on display as Sexton continuously sang both his classic hits that are known for its peaceful and melodic vibe, as well as music from his 2012 album Mix Tape of the Open Road.
Sexton sang all the genres he’s well known for such as rock, bluegrass, gospel, folk, and Americana. He mixed in his seamless transitions from song-to-song with his beat boxing and scat
“I tried to encompass all the classic American genres,” said Sexton, who currently resides in Massachusetts. “It’s a soundtrack for people’s lives.”
